The Winter Coats of Rodarte - F/W 2011

Being from Canada, a pastel collection for winter is a welcome change because I have had my share of black and grey.   The soft colors palette and the floor-length coats also bring a snow queen quality and a romanticism to the outfits that I find lovely. I would love to wear such beautiful coats to walk around town.  And the high neck dresses are especially elegant and would fit perfectly in my wardrobe.
What do you think?

"You didn't need to know that Kate and Laura Mulleavy had been watching the Terrence Malick movie Days of Heaven to ascertain that the sisters had taken the American Plains as their latest inspiration. The clues weren't exactly hard to follow on today's runway: silk gowns printed with a wheat field at the hem, ankle-grazing prairie coats, leather and ponyskin separates with geometric insets that called to mind quilts.   Malick's film is a fashion favorite, but the Mulleavy sisters made the reference their own via their signature devotion to craft. The quilting on the pinafore tops and apron skirts was appliquéd by hand, and the wool and mohair sweaters likewise never saw the inside of a knitting machine."  (Source: Style.com)

My Closet • The Soft Pink Cardigan

I'm wearing a BCBG MaxAzria soft pink cardigan with a thrifted black blouse and a DIY lace pussybow.  The cardigan was a Christmas gift from my sister.  Isn't it lovely?  I don't remember where I got the tights - I've had them for years.
I hope you had a wondeful Christmas!

Aren't these hats absolutely fabulous?! Which one is your favorite?
Now, do me a favor and look back at the pictures but this time, look at the outfits the model is wearing.
Gorgeous fur skirts, oversized knit sweater worn with a paper bag skirt and a wonderful leopard coat.  Lovely!

Carrie Bradshaw's Best Fall/Winter Outfits

Throughout the years that Sex and The City was on the air, Carrie Bradshaw lived in an endless summer.  She wore vintage dresses, short shorts, Manolo Blahnik sandals and carried a lace umbrella to protect herself from the sun.   But for the last season - Season 6, Part Two - the producers decided to try something new by placing Bradshaw in the cold weather of Paris and the snow of New York City.

In my quest for the perfect winter outfit, I decided to go to the source of style and asked myself: "What does the queen of fashion wear during the coldest months of the year?"  Let me guide you through the fall/winter wardrobe of Miss Bradshaw.  I also threw in a couple of dresses that would be perfect to ring in the New Year!

Lana Del Rey • Up and Coming Star

Growing up, there was no YouTube and the only way I had to watch my favourite videos was to spend a whole day in front of Musique Plus (the French-Canadian MTV) in hope that they would show them.   I know - I am old ;)  You guys, in your teenage years, grew up with YouTube but it still amazes me that everything I want to watch is just a click away and sometime I get a little carried away.   I spent the whole day watching stuff on YouTube like it was a new toy that my parents were going to take away any minute. By the way, it is an analogy.  I don't live at my parents'  ;)  And when I was ready to shut down my computer and go to bed, I saw this video...

Isn't this song amazing and the video mind-blowing?!  In my opinion, Lana Del Rey is the up-and-coming artist (and fashionista) to watch in 2012.  Her debut album is due January 30th and I will buy it for sure! I've already watched everything available on YouTube and I am hooked!

Here is what iTunes says about her:
"Vocalist Lana Del Rey makes atmospheric, orchestral retro-'60s-sounding pop that showcases her torchy image and sensuously husky singing style. A native of Lake Placid, New York, Del Rey released the single "Kill Kill" under her given name, Lizzy Grant, in 2009 before remaking herself into the pop femme fatale character Lana Del Rey. A video for the single "Video Games" appeared online in August of 2011 and drew considerable buzz, as did a "secret show" she performed at Brooklyn's Grasslands Gallery that September. Del Rey's EP, featuring the songs "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans," was released in fall 2011. "
What do you think?  Am I right or am I right?! ;)

My Closet • Last December

I took these pictures last year - December 1st, 2010.   I still like this look a lot because there is a snow queen vibe to it.  It is always my biggest challenge during winter, to look feminine even with a ton of layers on. This year, we don't have that much snow.  It snowed but it rained a lot today and now it's all gone.  I even wonder if we are going to have a white Christmas.  I even checked the weather forecast and there is no snow on the horizon!

The weird thing about this outfit is that I wouldn't be able to wear it this year.  First of all, the zipper broke on my Steve Madden boots - I had them for years so it was okay.  It also gave me the perfect reason to buy the thigh high boots I wanted.  Second of all, I have no idea where I put the skirt and I had completely forgotten that I had this belt.  I'm not sure where it is - might be with the skirt, lost in the back of my closet! :)

Food for Thought • Creative Work & Beginners

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.
A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

This quote is from Ira Glass.  He is the host of Public Radio International's "This American Life"
I found out about this quote on the blog Chameleonic.
Unfortunately, I don't know the source of the amazing picture.

The Lovely Style of Michelle Wiliams

The perfect complement to Michelle Williams lovely style is her blonde pixie hair cut.  Have you noticed that Michelle Williams hardly ever wears jewelry? A beautiful woman with an amazing sense of style doesn't need to overdo it with accessories. She told Elle Magazine recently about her hair cut: "Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!"  She went for the short locks when she and Heath Ledger were dating. "I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it," she said.  A lovely story as lovely as her style!

Video • Scintillation

This moving video is by Xavier Chassaing.
"This is an experimental film made up of over 35,000 photographs. It combines an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques."

The intro is a little bit long.  It gets really amazing around 1:00.

My Closet • The Knit Dress

It snowed on Friday and it looks like I am living in winter wonderland.
It is so beautiful that it almost makes me forget that I hate winter! ;)

I am wearing a sleeveless Victoria's Secret dress over a black turtleneck.
