Taking a Break

My life just took a different turn this morning.  My boyfriend was having problems at work for a while and this morning, he decided that enough was enough.  He quit his job.  He is very upset about the whole situation and needs my support.  You will understand that I will not post in the next few days.  Anyway, I can't concentrate.  For those of you who have been reading my blog for a while, you may remember an issue I talked about between my boss and my boyfriend.  We now have to figure out how to handle the future.

My Closet • The Pink Scarf

I did a post about scarves a couple of weeks ago.
Most of you told me that although you loved scarves, you still had to figure out how to wear them.

Here is my tip: Think of a scarf as a statement necklace.
Instead of wearing a statement necklace, try a scarf next time.

I wore this outfit to work yesterday.
If you want more ideas on how to tie a scarf, check out this post.

Starring Daphne Guinness...

I have been fascinated by Daphne Guinness ever since I saw her in the documentary about Valentino, The Last Emperor.  She appeared for about 10 seconds on screen but she made a very strong impression on me.  The following day, I was trying to find on the internet who this woman with bi-colored hair was.
My favorite thing about her very unique style is her fabulous black and white hair and the way she wears it.  She looks like a monarchistic widow of another era who went shopping in the future.  Some people make fun of her hair but I think it's a masterpiece.

I am showing you two clips today.  The first one is a documentary by filmmaker Brennan Stasiewicz and is an intimate portray of Daphne Guinness.  The second clip is very simple - the director bumped into her on the street and asked her about what she was wearing.  I love how she has that her style is a work in progress...isn't it for all of us fashion lovers?

I looked at over 2000 pairs of shoes from the fall 2011 collections to find the best ones.
My favorite pair is the black Diego Dolcini - 2nd row, 1st one.
What is yours?

Bottega Veneta • Viaggio Notturno

Shot at New York’s Setai Hotel, this movie is described by Nowness.com as "a meditation on the romance of travel, the anonymity of hotel life and clandestine bedtime rituals.  The items featured in the short film - the Marco Polo hard-case luggage, the woven leather Cabat bag and the sleeping mask - are from Bottega Veneta's permanent collection.  It is hard not to be haunted by the beautiful score by Austin-based chamber-pop band Balmorhea.

Viaggio Notturno (Night Journey) - directed by Christian Weber - was inspired by his own life. “I spend ten days a month alone in a hotel, seeing people pass in the hallways, glimpsing them through windows or as they step out of the elevator,” he says. “You see these people, but you have no idea what their stories are, you can only guess. It’s about evoking that surreal state of mind you enter when you’re in an unfamiliar place.”

I have been working in the hotel business for 15 years. Being in a hotel is part of my everyday life.  It is no longer as mysterious and glamorous to me as it is to other people but it doesn't matter.  I remember the attraction this business had on me when I first started.  I guess that it must be the reason why I was so fond of this short film - I recognized my own life in it.

Diary • My Lost & Found Trench

Here is a little story about the black trench that I always wear when fall comes and how I ended up getting it.

My ex used to be the manager of a 3-floor nightclub – the biggest nightclub where I live. People went to the club, got drunk and forgot stuff – cameras, cell phones, winter coats and bras. Yes, bras and panties sometimes. Don’t ask me how it got there! I am still trying to figure out why a girl would take them off in the first place. There was a room full of lost and found. He kept the stuff for 3 months and after that he called Salvation Army.
I knew about the huge amount of lost & found but never gave it much thought - until one day. I was between jobs and could not afford new clothes. My ex was about to call Salvation Army and told me to check out the clothes that were sent away - that I might find something interesting.
So I went. I could not believe all the pretty unclaimed clothes there were! How could a girl forget her coat in freezing winter and not even claim it later? Thanks to all the drunken girls that ever forgot something because it felt like I had a thrift store to myself. I never got near the bras and the gloves were a frustrating item - there was only one of each - but I found some great things there that I am still wearing today.
One of them is my black trench. It’s very simple and looks pretty much like the picture along this post.  I often get compliments about it and it still makes me laugh when someone asks me where I got it.

J'adore Dior Impressive Commercial

(Image via Fashionist.ca)

J'adore Dior's lastest spot  is very impressive because it uses CGI technology to bring alive some of the most famous actresses from the golden age of cinema such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly.  You have to see it for yourself.  It is truly amazing.

But the tour de force of this ad is not about the CGI but about the fact that the people at Dior managed to make Marilyn Monroe appear in a Dior ad when she was always associated with Chanel.  One of her most famous quote involves the perfume Chanel No.5.  When the actress was asked what she wore in bed, she replied: "Why, Chanel No.5, of course"  These days, thanks to the magic of CGI, she is wearing both!

A little trivia game now - can you name the other legends that appear in the commercial? I will give out the answer on Twitter tomorrow.

The Blush Gown of Gwyneth Paltrow

I am in love with this beautiful blush-toned Prada gown that Gwyneth Paltrow was wearing for the 'Contagion' premiere during the 68th Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2011 in Venice, Italy.  I especially love the bow on the back, the lovely collar line and waist line.
