Elle Fanning & Helena Bonham Carter • MARC JACOBS

I never liked the Marc Jacobs campaigns. The hyper realism, overexposed - too much light-, “ugly is the new beautiful” concept never appealed to me.  In fact, it always made me very uncomfortable - but it was until now.  Marc Jacobs chose two of my favorite actress - Elle Fanning and Helena Bonham Carter - as the new faces for his Fall 2011 campaign.  I am delighted by the choice of two actresses at opposite poles of the age spectrum.

I have been fascinated by Elle Fanning ever since I saw her in the movie « The Door in the Floor », an adaptation of a John Irving novel. She was absolutely flawless in the role. I was so impressed by her performance that I couldn’t get it out of my head for days. How could a 5-year-old play such a complex role when she was too young to even understand the full extent of it?

Marc Jacobs is not the only one to hire a promising young actress.  Hailee Steinfeld - the 14-year-old Academy Award nominee - is the new face for the Miu Miu Fall 2011 campaign. (see related post: Is Hailee Steinfeld too young for Miu Miu)  But Jacobs concept for his campaign is to show two very different women - which is a very smart marketing move.  His campaign will surely appeal to his younger and older customers.  Surprisingly, his campaign was not harshly criticized like the Miu Miu campaign.  Do you think it's because 13-year-old Elle Fanning is sharing the campaign with an older woman?  But the result is the same, don't you think?
Helena Bonham Carter – on the other hand – is a mature actress with an extensive acting experience. She is one of the few actresses who always put her characters before her pride. Let’s just mention her role as the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland – oversized head, big eyes and forehead. She doesn’t take herself seriously which is a very rare quality in Hollywood where appearance is everything. This is this sense of humour that we see in the ads.

Have you seen the movie "Conversations with Other Women"? I think it is my favourite movie featuring Ms. Bonham Carter. It is a very realistic romantic drama. She plays a woman in her late thirties who looks back on the love story of her early twenties through a conversation with a man she meets at a wedding. She is so beautiful, charming and personable. It is rare that we get the chance to see her playing a very normal contemporary woman and she is as divine in this role as she is in her extravagant ones – maybe even more.

I love the framing and how her legs are sticking out like the Wicked Witch of the West.

  1. Helena Bonham carter reminds me of Vivienne Westwood in these pictures! :) I must watch that movie 'Conversations with other women' now. Thanks for the suggestion!

As for the 'ugly is new beautiful' aesthetic in photography- I have always liked and maybe even loved it. It's not just ugly. It's ugly with a twist ;)

    And btw, it's JuergeN Teller.

  6. My "problem" with Marc Jacobs ad campaigns is that they seem overexposed= too much light. And some of them are too crazy for me!!! Those with Elle Fanning are pretty awesome. I guess they didn't go over the top, since she's a child after all!
