GREY GARDENS 101

The original movie (1972)                    The HBO Remake (2009)

After reading the comments about the fashion editorial I titled GREY GARDENS, I realized that some of you may not be familiar with what Grey Gardens actually was.
Grey Gardens is a documentary filmed in 1972 which depicts the isolated lives of the mother and daughter pair both named Edith Beale in a decrepit mansion in the Hamptons named Grey Gardens.  They were relatives of Jackie O and were from a once wealthy prominent family. Attention was called to them when it was learned the county health department condemned their home and they were ordered to clean it up and get it up to code. It is a cult classic and was remade into a feature film by HBO.  (Source)

If you haven't seen the movie yet, you absolutely must rent it!  There is no way to describe this very unique story besides that reality IS really stranger than fiction.  This movie will haunt you for days after watching it.

If you have seen it, what did you think? Did you like it?  I felt a lot of compassion for Little Edie.  She was manipulated by her mother in such vicious ways.  In my opinion, Big Edie totally ruined Little Edie's life.  The mother was so afraid of being alone that she did everything in her power to make her daughter stay - even feeding Little Edie's own insecurities.  Very sad.

Portrait of a Designer : Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham is no longer known for her past music career nor for being David Beckham's wife.  She is the up-and-coming designer to watch in the next years. Her collections focus on achieving the perfect cut along with a retro sexiness. Now that she has four Ready-to-wear seasons under her belt, let me review what this talented designer has done so far.

FIRST COLLECTION
SPRING/SUMMER 2009
Presentation : Waldorf Towers, by appointment only.
Her first collection is like Beckham herself - ladylike.  She presented flawlessly made dresses, timeless and elegant with special seams and removable "corsets" to give any women the perfect silhouette from any angle.
The colors and cuts are classic and basic as if she wanted to build a wardrobe over the years - season after season.  In my opinion, this collection made apparent Beckham's seriousness about her new career.  She could have easily gone over-the-top with extravagant pieces but instead decided to learn the basics.  Only 400 dresses were made and priced between $1,200 to $2,800.

SECOND COLLECTION
FALL/WINTER 2009
Presentation : Waldorf Towers, by appointment only.
For her second collection, Beckham added new textures, such as crepe, sequins and metallics, to the dresses .  She also offered a wider range of dresses - from cocktail dresses to red-carpet gowns. She continued to do what she does best - beautifully made sheaths and shift dresses - but added modern details such as lightly padded shoulders.

THIRD COLLECTION
SPRING/SUMMER 2010
Presentation :  A small, informal runway show that she narrated look by look
New hues were added for spring such as nude and yellow.  She used prints for the first time on a wrap cocktail dress. Nicole Phelps from Style.com wrote that :" when Beckham does want to join the big-timers on the runway, she'll probably need to expand further into daywear, but three seasons in, she's certainly established herself as a red-carpet expert."

FOURTH COLLECTION
FALL/WINTER 2010
Presentation :   About 25 editors and retailers gathered in an Upper East Side town house. Once again, Beckham did the narration for each piece.
For her fourth collection, she continued to expand the variety of colors, textures and cuts offered to her clients.  The colors are rich - from burned orange/red to sapphire - and really show off the cut of the clothes.  All the dresses have Beckham's signature - structured, timeless and classic, yet modern and sexy.  For this collection, she offered bias, draping and her classic ultra-fitted silhouette. Victoria Beckham is slowly establishing herself as a designer with an impeccable sense of fitting and cut.  Her pieces are bound to become classics.
