How to get ready for fall - Part 1

GETTING STARTED...

1. Check out the summer sales.
Go shopping one last time for summer clothes - you might find good bargains. After September 1st, don't buy any more summer clothes. You will spend your money on items you're not going to wear - or maybe just wear once or twice - and next summer you will already be tired of them.

2. Clean and reorganize your closet.
I was off on Monday and this is what I did. I bought more hangers and a 6-shelf sweater bag for storage. You don't need a whole day to reorganize your closet, just an hour. Put in storage any clothes you haven't worn in the last 6 months, but don't throw anything away yet : you might like some of these clothes again in a year. Put together the skirts, the pants, the dresses, etc. to have a good visual idea of what you have and what you need. If you have 10 white shirts, it is time to try something else.

3. Get insprired.
Inspiration is the key, especially at the beginning of a season. Check out blogs, fashion magazines, editorials and fall/winter collections online to figure out what fabulous items are missing from your closet.

4. Make a list.
If you are very organized, you might want to make a list of items.  This will keep you from making an impulse purchase that you will never wear. You should not buy something that doesn't fit with the style of the other items in your closet.  If you want to try a new style, buy accessories that will fit with your current clothes and give them a new vibe. For example, for a more bohemian look you might want to buy long, flowy scarves, rings and bracelets that you can pile up instead of buying new pieces of clothing. This is a safety net in case you grow tired of the new look - accessories will be less expensive than a whole new wardrobe.

Fall Overview by Carine Roitfeld

"There's a rather curious sense of contradiction in the air this season. For fashion has always been a quest for novelty and innovation, constantly changing from one season to the next. And yet for Autumn/Winter 2010-11, it is championing the right not to innovate at any price. Of course, this doesn't mean that we can expect a surge of retro collections or sweeping vintage mania, but more of a move back to time-honoured classics - those enduring pieces that confer both status and stature on the wearer. This shift is visible in the sharp masculine tailoring and suiting that hit the runways this season, along with stricter, more traditional lines, trusty neutral tones - blacks, greys and beiges - and robustly authentic fabrics, including flannel, Prince of Wales, tartans, houndstooth, cashmere, leather and fur. Spectacular effects have given way to a more serene strength, in which a well-grounded "body & soul" on the move takes pride of place. The fashion world hasn't so much forfeited the pleasures of life per se, as decided that this time round it would tap into a more natural style and an indomitable sense of well-being. Which explains the presence of the season's other star performer: knitwear - morning, noon and night - in its myriad and most luxuriant forms, either sheer and refined or with a rawer, handicraft feel, setting the cursor on a much sleeker look. The message is clear, the point being to focus on what really matters: real everyday living."

(Mexx cardigan - Vintage scarf - Vintage purse - Aldo shoes)

My sister gave me the scarf and the purse as birthday gifts this weekend.

Does she know my tastes or what?

I had the day off so I went for a casual but retro look.
I also couldn't wait to wear my sister's finds!

Thank you Mylène!

Abbey Lee Kershaw is one of my favorite models at the moment.
This Aussie beauty is currently ranked 5th on Models.com.
I like her big blue eyes, her bangs and her doll face.

Lady Dior

LADY DIOR is an amazing campaign featuring Marion Cottilard.  The campaign is separated into three parts and each part is highly developed around a concept associated with a poem, a song or a short film.  Here are some highlights.

Birthday Girl

Today is my birthday !

32 years old...

That's how it is - you get older or you die.

Since I'm not dead,  I went to a new sushi restaurant for lunch with my co-workers to celebrate.

After work, I got a massage at the hotel spa....90 min. of pure bliss.

For dinner, my boyfriend cooked me the meal of my choice.

I wanted a shrimp summer salad. Yummy!

And this is exactly what I got - Giant tiger shrimps flambéed in Cuban rum !!!

Do I have to mention he's an excellent cook ?

A Single Man - Movie

The movie is as elegant and stylish as Tom Ford himself.  I read somewhere that the movie was not so much directed as designed and I couldn't agree more. Every frame is as beautiful as a fashion magazine photo. We feel Tom Ford's fashion background and the result is amazing. The costumes and sets (from circa 1962) are so beautiful.

The subject discussed in this movie - a man mourning the death of his boyfriend - is treated in an unusual way. We don't see the main characters struggling with their homosexuality, even though the movie is set in 1962. The viewer sees their relationship from the inside : the everyday life, the love between two people, the tenderness. I don't think the movie would have reached this level of intimacy if it had shown the judgmental society.

I like the fact that the movie transcends gender. We feel the main character's grief and sadness over the loss of his loved one; it doesn't matter if it is a man or a woman. I am sure we have to thank Collin Firth for this. His performance is amazing, very subtle but also very poignant.

Tom Ford's debut film is exquisite and won't disappoint you. The story could have easily been overwhelmed by the impeccable art direction but the screenplay is strong from start to finish.

Make sure to listen to Tom Ford's movie commentary. He shares intimate details about his life - he has been with the same man for 23 years - and admits to some of the mistakes he made as a debutant director. This makes him accessible and unpretentious.

My Trip to Cuba

So I am back from Cuba and contrary to all expectations I had a great time!

I know it sounds weird, but I didn't want to go there in the first place.  When my boyfriend and I talked about our vacation budget for this year, we realized it was very limited. We had to re-evaluate our destination options.  Last year, we stayed in a 5-stars hotel in South Beach, Miami, but this year we could not afford that kind of extravagance. Instead of going to Santa Fe, NM like I wanted we had to choose something more economical.  I know I was being a spoiled brat -- a lot of people have to stay home during the summer vacations and at least I still had a chance to go somewhere.

But I was annoyed.
I was annoyed when I realized we had to go to Cuba or stay home.
I was annoyed when I booked the trip.
I even was annoyed 2 days before leaving.

You are going to ask me : why so annoyed?
Because I like luxurious destinations and hate all-inclusive resort.
Cuba was not at all what I was expecting for my vacations.
But contrary to all expectations, I had a great time!

My days were filled with swimming in the most crystal clear water, sunbathing, reading, napping in a hammock, drinking mojitos and eating seafood.  The resort was not extravagant but still very nice and comfortable with lush gardens and a beautiful private beach.

I visited La Havana, a truly mesmerizing city.

Cubans are very proud and well-educated (university is free for everyone).  They love their country and want it to stay theirs even if it means living in poverty.  They don't want to sell their souls to some foreign entrepreneurs.  I respect that.

Cubans are also very warm and friendly.  I met some wonderful people during the 7 days I was in Cuba. It was a vacation filled with human connections and true feelings instead of filled with money and superficiality, as it would have been if I had stayed in an extravagant ritzy hotel.  Truly refreshing!

See you in a week my dear readers!

Like all of you right now, I am sweating in my appartment but tomorrow at the same time, I am going to be on the beach wearing a bikini and sipping a much needed drink!

Yes, my dear readers, it is time for my summer vacations.
Unfortunately I will not be able to blog for a week because the internet connection in Cuba is still dial-up so I can't even imagine uploading pictures with this type of connection.
I promise you to come back tanned, refreshed and with tons of pictures of my fabulous outfits there!

I still planned for you something entertaining while I am away.

A More Polished Look

Louis Vuitton Fall 2010

After I saw the Louis Vuitton and Prada fall collections, I knew it was just a matter of time before Vogue US ("When did chic get so cool?" by Mark Holgate - Vogue US July 2010) covered this new emerging style : retro, polished, all dressed up and extremely feminine.  Jeans are discarded in favor of full knee-length skirts and polished hairdos take the place of messy buns.

Just a couple of years ago women were expected to be polished and dressed up -- and not just for going out on a Saturday night, but for everyday life as well.  I love the quote from Mark Holgate that "girls who once dressed for their inner rocker don't want to hum that tune anymore."  According to him, the tipping point "was Balmain's  ripped and shredded tee at a staggering $1624" that made people lose interest in the rocker style. After reading this,  I couldn't help but think about the 1992 controversial Marc Jacobs grunge collection in which he charged between $500 to $1400 for flannel shirts, second hand store looking dresses and slouchy sweaters.  The writer even says Balmain himself moved on with his fall collection "full of niftily tailored pin-striped blazers and boot-cut pants".  He even adds that "it's a razor-sharp chic, only this time around, the razor hasn't been let loose on the clothes" I think that says it all !

Personnally I am very happy with this new emerging trend because I look my best in feminine, polished clothes.  I tried when I was younger to go for a more casual style but it was just not for me.  That doesn't mean I have given up - I still try sometimes but my attempts get fewer and fewer.  I hope this trend  makes me want to embrace my inner lady for good.

When I was younger, I used to watch old Hollywood movies thinking about how women back then really dressed like women.  Okay maybe it was a little too gender stereotyped but it was sooo beautiful and elegant.  People don't take the time to dress up anymore.  I will leave you with a quote of one of my favorite style icons Daphne Guinness : "I think you do have a more fun life if you wear beautiful clothes. There is a certain joy in it; dressing well is an art and it shows respect to be neatly turned out."
