Vogue US June 2010 - Review Part 2

Frock & Roll

What I liked about it:
· Karen Elson and Jack White is such a unique and mysterious couple, it was a treat to see them featured together in the magazine.
· The article is well penned by Jonathan Van Meter. We get a really good feeling of what it is to be Karen Elson. She is portrayed as a multi-faceted woman: a wife, a mother, a model, a muse and now a singer.
· I looooove the first photo of the couple in the 70’s car; it really shows some emotions and intimacy between them.

What I didn’t like:· I feel like there was no storyline between the photos, no connection.
· I hate the picture of Karen Elson with the leaves crown; she looks like Jesus with a crown of thorns instead of a forest fairy.
· Jack White and Karen Elson both have such unique features, I think Vogue should have used that more.

Overall:
The article lives up to Vogue standards but I am disappointed by the photo series. Vogue had the perfect ingredients : photographer Annie Leibovitz, Fashion Editor Grace Coddington who was inspired for years by Elson and a beautiful and unique couple photographed together for the first time...the cake just didn’t rise !

I love those shoes.

I think of them as Mary Janes with a twist.

For those - like myself - who don't know why they are called Mary Janes, read this :

Mary Jane was a character in the comic strip, Buster Brown, which was first published in 1902. She was the sister of the title character, Buster Brown. In 1904, th comic strip licenses were sold to companies to use the Buster Brown characters to advertise their products, among them was the Brown Shoe Company. The style of shoe both Buster Brown and Mary Jane wore came to be known by her name, Mary Jane.

Vogue US June 2010 - Review Part 1

ENDLESS SUMMER

What I loved about it:
· Blake Lively is the quintessential golden girl. It was a perfect cast and a nice change from the same models always featured in the magazine.
· Pairing her with Surf Legend Rob Machado and crew was a stroke of genius. The photos really come alive with him and his crew, it was a brilliant twist.
· The clothes were perfectly chosen from the Michael Kors mint-green cashmere slashed top on the cover to the Gucci ribbed shrunken jacket and shorts in the photo series.

What I didn’t like:
· Now I'm going to play the devil’s advocate. I recall reading The Letters from Readers after Lively’s first Vogue appearance and some of the readers were not pleased to see her in the magazine. One reader wrote: « with all of the respectable, talented actresses gaining exposure at the moment, you choose to photograph Lively, whose only claim to fame is her character’s wardrobe on a show where the young women portrayed are as superficial as the dialogue they spew out. » I love Gossip Girl but does Serena really belong in Vogue? You are going to tell me that’s because Vogue is ahead of the curve and she will become a huge star…I told you I was playing devil’s advocate!

OVERALL :
Fantastic editorial! Blake Lively was the perfect cast for the beach babe! The clothes were perfection! Rob Machado was the cherry on the sundae!

An Unrelated Obsession

It is made by a sushi shop near my appartment and I could eat this thing every day !

FUJI BOWLS
Served on rice with tamago, marinated shiitake mushroom, carrot, daikon, snow pea sprouts, green onion, marinated ginger, sesame seeds. 3 types :

Vegetarian : wakame seaweed, cherry tomato, red pepper, edamame beans
Tataki : grilled salmon, grilled tuna, cucumber
Sea food : shrimp, snow crab, red masago, cucumber, red pepper

It is yummy, let me tell you !

I am so sleepy right now.

My co-workers might hear someone snoring soon and it will be me.

I am drinking a Coke - not Diet I hate aspartane.

I hope it will keep my eyes open.

I don't drink coffee, my stomach doesn't stomach it.

Red Bull is way too strong for me, it makes me want to run the marathon.

If I fall asleep, 100 employees will not get their paychecks on Thursday.

That would also include myself. Not a good idea, I am broke.

Could anyone give me a good slap in the face?
