Do you remember the time when supermodels were more famous than movie stars?
It was the Supermodel era, when Linda Evagelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer etc. ruled the world. It was before the designers and the fashion editors realized what “monsters” they had created and took their power back by putting movie stars on fashion magazine covers and by hiring models from Eastern Europe who couldn’t be interviewed. Models were sent back to the fashion world and it hasn’t been the same since.
That was called the 90’s, when the supermodels were known by their first names.
This Tuesday’s Video is dedicated to George Michael and the Supermodels of the 90’s. In my opinion, George Michael contributed significantly to the Supermodel phenomenon. He helped the models cross over from the closed fashion world into the mainstream by hiring them for two videos: Freedom 90 and Too Funky.
In the first video that I am presenting- Freedom 90- we don’t even see George Michael. This was somewhat unusual for the time. Instead, he recruited several supermodels to lyp synch. People in the music industry didn’t put that much thought into the creative process of making videos at the time, so this video really stood out and was ahead of its time. The proof: 20 years later, it hasn’t aged a day and it is still as mesmerizing as the first time it aired in 1990.
Models featured: Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz. There is also Mario Sorrenti - now a Vogue photographer - as one of the male models.
The second video that I am presenting is Too Funky. The idea behind this video was to hire back the same models from the Freedom 90 video. However, the director, Thierry Mugler, wanted to use new models and only kept Linda Evangelista. Thierry Mugler was one of the most famous designers in the 90’s and all the costumes featured in the video were his creations. Look for the lace dress worn by Nadja, it is to die for!
The line:"Would you like me to seduce you? Is that what you're trying to tell me?" is Anne Bacroft's line in the movie The Graduate.
Models featured: Linda Evangelista, Nadja Auermann, Emma Sjöberg, Estelle Hallyday and a very young Tyra Banks. These models were not part of the original supermodels but that didn't make them less famous.
