The movie is as elegant and stylish as Tom Ford himself. I read somewhere that the movie was not so much directed as designed and I couldn't agree more. Every frame is as beautiful as a fashion magazine photo. We feel Tom Ford's fashion background and the result is amazing. The costumes and sets (from circa 1962) are so beautiful.
The subject discussed in this movie - a man mourning the death of his boyfriend - is treated in an unusual way. We don't see the main characters struggling with their homosexuality, even though the movie is set in 1962. The viewer sees their relationship from the inside : the everyday life, the love between two people, the tenderness. I don't think the movie would have reached this level of intimacy if it had shown the judgmental society.
I like the fact that the movie transcends gender. We feel the main character's grief and sadness over the loss of his loved one; it doesn't matter if it is a man or a woman. I am sure we have to thank Collin Firth for this. His performance is amazing, very subtle but also very poignant.
Tom Ford's debut film is exquisite and won't disappoint you. The story could have easily been overwhelmed by the impeccable art direction but the screenplay is strong from start to finish.
Make sure to listen to Tom Ford's movie commentary. He shares intimate details about his life - he has been with the same man for 23 years - and admits to some of the mistakes he made as a debutant director. This makes him accessible and unpretentious.
