The Beehive and the Bun

After reading the article "High & Mighty" in this month's Vogue US and seeing the fabulous beehive of Natalia Vodianova (see pictures in an older post), I was inspired to take my hair to new heights.  I tried two classic retro styles - with a modern twist - and here is the result of my experiment.

Thursday
"THE BEEHIVE"

Max Studio black skirt
My sister's top
Aldo purple shoes
Ebay belt

Friday
"THE BUN"

Thrifted purple dress
Aldo red shoes

The article "High & Mighty" by Sally Singer focuses on the hair as an accessory. It's the one I sometimes overlook because I am in such a rush in the morning.
I have to admit that she was right about the fact that a new updo makes your old clothes look better.  Look at my thrifted purple dress.  It is cute but nothing that really stands out of a crowd. With a more polished hairstyle, the outfit looks fresh and new. I didn't even need other accessories!

MY RECOMMENDATIONS :
  • Get the right instruments : hairspray, tons of bobbypins, elastics, teasing comb or anything you think you might need to make your life easier.
  • These updos take some time -- don't think you'll find a 2 min. technique.  You won't. Practice the night before so you are not in a rush and already know what you are doing.
  • Be patient.  Practice makes perfect.
  • Look at these two videos from Strawberry Koi Vintage on youtube.  She is a great teacher!

  • You don't have to follow the videos step-by-step. You can use shortcuts.  For example, for the beehive I haven't mastered how to do the back yet so I use a cute big hair clip.
  • Don't forget to have fun with it.  Sometimes it can be frustrating if you are clumsy or slow but remember that you don't have to achieve perfection on your first try.
  •
     Good luck !

The purple dress and red shoes are also phenomenal.

I love how these hair styles more than complement what you're wearing.
